Duplicate layer and converted to monochrome, then using eraser to bring back some of colour on base layer.

The effect is quite easy to archive, so try out. I think it is fun, and depends on the subject it is quite effective to draw the eye to the main subject.
I tried commenting on this yesterday, but the comment link didn't show up. (Who knows why, I was on dialup.)
